Why Black is Beautiful: The True Story of Savons des Îles Black Soap

At first glance, the deep gray hue of our Black Soap may surprise you. I’ll be honest—when I first considered creating a black soap, I hesitated. I could imagine myself as a customer, unsure of a bath or body product that looked so dark. Would it feel unusual? Intimidating?

But the more I researched and explored the history and ingredients of authentic Black Soap, the more my perspective changed. I discovered the remarkable qualities of activated charcoal, and how soaps made with coconut ash have long been celebrated for their natural richness and unique properties. I realized that the very color that might cause hesitation is actually a sign of authenticity and artisanal craftsmanship. That realization inspired me to bring this tradition to life and share it with you.

Black Soap is black because it is made the traditional way: plant matter, ash, and natural oils melded together through a careful saponification process. Each shade—from soft charcoal gray to deep ebony—is a reflection of the botanicals, oils, and clays that make the soap truly exceptional.

In short: the darker the bar, the more authentic, untouched, and artisanal it is. The color is not something to fear—it is a badge of quality, a visual testament to the care and heritage behind every bar.

At Savons des Îles, we honor this tradition while adding a Haitian touch. Our Black Soap is crafted with Haitian castor oil, shea butter, coconut milk, bentonite clay, and activated charcoal, creating a smooth, creamy lather that feels luxurious on the skin. The gray lather may surprise you at first, but it leaves your skin feeling soft, clean, and naturally radiant—without any artificial additives.

Think of it this way: the color tells a story. A story of heritage, plant-based craftsmanship, and ingredients you can trust. It is a soap that wears its authenticity proudly, and every use is a small act of indulgence in something pure, natural, and distinctly artisanal.

So let go of any hesitation. Black is beautiful—and it’s good for your skin because it’s real.

Cheers,

Johanne
